A report from the Swedish parliament defense committee warns of the potential for a Russian military attack on Sweden, citing Russia’s aggressive posture and intact military capabilities, Reuters reported.

According to sources cited by Swedish public service broadcaster SVT on Sunday, a report from a defense committee in the Swedish parliament has indicated that the possibility of a Russian military attack on Sweden cannot be dismissed, Reuters informed.

Sweden has been actively working to strengthen its defense capabilities and applied for NATO membership last year in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Reuters added.

While Sweden received an invitation to apply, the ratification of the application by Turkey and Hungary is still pending, Reuters indicated.

The forthcoming parliamentary report, scheduled to be published on Monday, highlights that despite Russian ground forces being occupied in Ukraine, other forms of military aggression against Sweden cannot be ruled out, as stated by sources involved in the report, Reuters advised.

The report also emphasizes that Russia has demonstrated a lowered threshold for using military force and exhibits a significant political and military risk appetite, Reuters notified.

SVT reports that the forthcoming report presents a new defense doctrine for Sweden, emphasizing membership in NATO as the basis, departing from the previous doctrine that relied on cooperation with Nordic states and the EU, Reuters reported.
