Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Hussam Zaki stressed on Friday “the need to break the presidential deadlock in Lebanon,” calling on all sides to “prioritize national interest above other considerations and open the way for the resumption of the constitutional path in electing a new president of the republic.”
After meeting former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, Zaki asserted that “the current situation is dangerous, as it exacerbates challenges facing all state institutions and limits their ability to fulfill their duties towards the Lebanese.”
He said that he “counts on the Lebanese leaders’ wisdom and awareness,” and conveyed the Arab League’s readiness to “assist Lebanon in all that would contribute to safely crossing this difficult stage.”
Moreover, Zaki reiterated that “commitment to UN Resolution 1701 is necessary to contain the current escalation in South Lebanon.”
