A symbolic procession was held in Moukhtara on Saturday to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the assassination of Kamal Joumblatt, the founder of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP).

Crowds gathered in the Chouf town to lay roses on his grave to recall his memory.

Teymour Joumblatt, Kamal Joumblatt’s grandson and current leader of the PSP, stressed that this commemoration constitutes “the symbol of a heritage of struggle, always renewed, embodying the national and Arab issues in which Kamal Joumblatt believed and for which he died”. Teymour Joumblatt also reiterated “his attachment to the national, philosophical, literary and reformist thought” of the PSP founder, as well as to “the transition program he proposed, so that it may serve as a bridge for the construction of a country where the values of justice, equality and democracy reign”.

For his part, former PSP leader Walid Joumblatt revived his father’s memory by posting a Marcel Khalifeh song entitled “Les souvenirs” on his X account.

Several political figures took on X to pay tribute to Joumblatt.

Democratic Gathering MP Bilal Abdallah reiterated Joumblatt’s “commitment to human socialism and the values of social justice, freedom, and development,” bearing “Kamal Joumblatt’s ideology as an identity.”

He also asserted the need to “break the ideals of confessionalism,” pleading for “a transition to a secular state.”

For his part, PSP parliamentarian Akram Chehayeb contended that “through his assassination, Kamal Joumblatt broke the great Arab prison” and that he “went to the end of his convictions, enriching thought, administration, and popular struggle.”

As for MP Ashraf Rifi, he evoked Kamal Joumblatt as “a symbol of righteousness and dignity, a model of knowledge, culture, and vision.”

“The Assad regime assassinated a Lebanese and Arab figure who did not recognize submission to tutelage and tyranny,” he added.
