The Kataeb politburo has warned against the attitude of “what’s left of the government,” which is one that “submits to Hezbollah’s terms and adopts its views while attributing them to the Lebanese people in negotiations with foreign envoys.”
“This constitutes a misappropriation of power in the absence of a president and contributes to dragging the country into a deadly confrontation that it is currently incapable of handling,” reads a statement issued at the end of the politburo’s weekly meeting on Monday.
The party held the government responsible for the disintegration of the state and the deterioration of the situation as a result of abdicating the state’s right to decide on war and peace and handing it over to Hezbollah and Iran.
The Kataeb also believe that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has dealt a decisive blow to the National Moderation bloc’s initiative to facilitate the presidential election. They reaffirmed, once again, that the only way out of the presidential deadlock is for Hezbollah to meet the opposition halfway by abandoning its candidate, Marada leader Sleiman Frangieh, for whom the pro-Iranian party is blocking the elections and paralyzing the country. As such, Samy Gemayel’s party is calling for a third candidate to be chosen without preconditions.
The Kataeb also evoked the memory of Pierre Gemayel and Antoine Ghanem and their comrades assassinated in 2005 in the wake of the Cedar Revolution.
