The Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Beirut, Bishop Elias Audi, began his sermon on Sunday by reproaching the parliament. He asked, “Hasn’t the parliament realized that its failure to elect a president contributes to the disintegration of this country, demoralizing its citizens, displacing them, and making the country vulnerable to recent attacks and violations?”

He wondered if “the absence of the state is the reason for the aggression, abuse and transgressions we witness?”

Bishop Audi noted that most of the leaders and officials wander, surrounded by entourages, and he wondered “what they fear.”

“When the day comes that we see leaders and rulers walking among the people without fear or concern, and when the number of accompanying men and entourage vehicles diminishes or disappears, only then will Lebanon become a safe haven, where its people fear for Lebanon more than they fear for themselves,” he said.
