Ecological massacres persist in Lebanon, met with widespread indifference. The latest incident occurred on Friday night in the Kalait Sultan area, situated between the villages of Tacheh and Bzebzina in Akkar. Residents were startled during the night as bulldozers audibly toppled centuries-old trees, all in the name of constructing a road through the land.

Regrettably, the degradation of Akkar’s forests is a distressingly familiar occurrence. Timber merchants frequently engage in this damaging practice, a recurring issue in the region that robs it of one of its most splendid assets—the forests, known as some of the most beautiful in Lebanon and the wider area.

During this ongoing crisis, the State’s presence has been notably lacking. Despite persistent warnings from elected representatives in the region, who have consistently implored relevant authorities to safeguard these vital forests, no effective strategy has been implemented to date.
