Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdallah Bou Habib stated that “Hezbollah assured us that it would not intervene” in the war in Gaza “unless Israel provokes Lebanon.”

In a statement to the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat in Washington, on the eve of the attacks carried out on Sunday, October 8, by Hezbollah against Israeli positions in the Chebaa farms – a contested sector on the border between Lebanon and the Jewish state – Bou Habib clarified that “Lebanon’s positions align with courageous Arab positions.”

He described the war taking place between Hamas and Israel in Gaza as “dangerous,” adding that “Israel’s persistent aggression against the Palestinian people is the root cause.”

“The efforts made by US Envoy Amos Hochstein to reach an agreement on the land border between Lebanon and Israel, are suspended until the end of the ongoing war,” he declared.

Bou Habib also contacted his Syrian counterpart, Faysal Mokdad, on Monday to offer his condolences following the deadly attack on a military academy in Homs. They also discussed preparations for the emergency meeting to be held by Arab foreign ministers in Cairo.
