Fares Souaid, former MP and president of the National Council for the Liberation of Lebanon from the Iranian occupation, accused Hezbollah on Sunday of wanting to “deconstruct” the Lebanese state to “build” its own. “A decision that doesn’t bother some Christians who think that the state’s collapse is an opportunity to build their own state,” he wrote this thinly veiled reference to the Free Patriotic Movement on his X account. “This is madness,” he said.

What’s even more alarming, according to Souaid, is that “the Sunnis have shirked their national responsibilities and wait.” He added, “The Maronite elites have also evaded their duties to defend Lebanon and adopted a conciliatory attitude towards the separatist movement and the Druze have lost initiative, and religious authorities are absent from the scene.”

“What is needed is to elevate the Lebanese crisis to the level of the Lebanese cause and hold local forces and Lebanon’s friends accountable for the country’s collapse in the context of reshaping the region,” Souaid emphasized. “The Palestinians have asserted themselves in any dialogue conference dedicated to the region. The Lebanese cause deserves it. We deserve it too,” he concluded.
