Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam affirmed on Wednesday that the government is stepping up efforts to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Speaking during a session of the Economic and Social Council, Salam stressed the state’s commitment to asserting sovereignty across all Lebanese territory, curbing the illegal circulation of weapons, combating smuggling and bolstering security, particularly at airport infrastructure.

He underscored the urgent need for comprehensive and credible reforms to lift the country out of its prolonged crisis. “The Economic and Social Council is a vital societal partner in this critical phase,” he stated, emphasizing that only the establishment of a modern state, one that earns the trust of both its citizens and the international community, could offer a way forward.

On the diplomatic front, Salam referenced joint initiatives undertaken with President Joseph Aoun during recent visits abroad. These efforts, he said, aim to reintegrate Lebanon into its Arab and international environments. “There can be no investment or sustainable public services without financial and economic stability,” he added.

Regarding development projects, the Prime Minister announced the completion of the master plan for the Kleiate airport in northern Lebanon’s Akkar region, with a view to making the facility operational. He also highlighted recent government field visits to South Lebanon, the North and the Beqaa to assess urgent regional needs.

In terms of governance and culture, Salam noted several upcoming initiatives: the adoption of a merit-based civil service recruitment mechanism, the transformation of Beirut’s National Library into a cultural hub and the rehabilitation of the Camille Chamoun Sports City complex.
