Since the ceasefire was declared on Thursday evening, a total but precarious calm prevails in the Ain el-Helweh camp in south Lebanon.

The ceasefire was announced following Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri’s talks with Azzam el-Ahmad, a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), on the one hand, and with Vice-President of Hamas Moussa Abou Marzouk, on the other.
Both of them were dispatched to Lebanon to attempt to calm the explosive situation in the camp, where fighting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah and Pro-Iranian Palestinian Islamist groups has been ongoing for almost ten days.

Except for a few gunshots heard during the funerals of victims of the clashes, the situation in the Palestinian refugee camp, where 17 people were killed and a hundred were wounded, remained calm on Thursday morning.
