On the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the Red Cross and the National Committee of the Families of the Disappeared in Lebanon organized a commemorative gathering in front of the ESCWA headquarters in downtown Beirut. While the number 17,000 is often mentioned, the Red Cross estimates that the actual number of disappeared individuals, excluding duplicates, is more likely to reach 5,000 to 6,000.
