MP Ali Hassan Khalil, the political assistant of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, lashed out at former President Michel Aoun and his son-in-law, Gebran Bassil, head of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) on Friday.

During the inauguration ceremony of the Islamic University campus in Bourj el-Barajneh (Beirut’s southern suburbs), the Amal Movement parliamentarian criticized the FPM’s desire to elect a president who complies with their own standards.

“We want a president who represents the whole country, not a sectarian president or one who only represents a specific party,” Khalil said.

“A president capable of reaching out to all parties with no exception, one who holds no grudges, has no hatred and creates no obstructions to serve his own personal interests,” he added.

In a thinly veiled reference to the FPM’s inefficiency in running state institutions, Khalil recalled the mismanagement of sectors such as electricity, water and energy-producing ships.
