The Lebanese Forces parliamentary bloc will not be taking part in the August 17 legislative session, according to LF MP Fadi Karam in an interview with Lebanese daily Ad-Diyar, published on Saturday.

“Parliament should only meet in order to elect a President. Legislation comes later, no matter what is on the agenda,” added Karam.

The LF MP insisted on the need to elect a President in order to guarantee that institutions run smoothly and to be able to come up with serious solutions to the crisis in the country. “Today’s solutions are temporary measures and do not benefit the Lebanese people,” according to Karam.

As a reminder, the position of the Lebanese Forces is generally aligned with that of the opposition.

The House Speaker, Nabih Berry, had called for a legislative session to take place on August 17, and the texts on the agenda relate primarily to the Sovereign Fund. Berry would like to have the bill approved before the arrival of the drilling vessel at the end of the month in order to restore the confidence of the international community and reassure the Lebanese that potential oil and gas resources will be well managed.

Thursday’s electoral session will also include a text on capital control.
