MP Ghayath Yazbeck (LF) believes that France has “retreated from its previous approach in dealing with the Lebanese presidential issue, and its endorsement of Sleiman Frangieh for president.”

On Friday morning, Yazbeck was commenting on the meeting that brought together French special envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian and the leader of the Lebanese Forces (LF) Samir Geagea.

“Le Drian spoke sincerely and objectively, asking about third options and names beyond the declared candidates, but the LF’s response was clear, that they will not back down under any pretext,” Yazbeck told Voice of All Lebanon.

He clarified that the LF had previously suggested MP Michel Moawad and secondly Former Minister Jihad Azour. He further stated: “Therefore, the opposing camp, especially Hezbollah, is required to end its backing of Frangieh. The outcome of the recent electoral session showed that there is a national consensus on rejecting Frangieh for objective reasons.”

When asked about suspected LF moves to undermine Army Commander Joseph Aoun’s chances of endorsement, Yazbeck stressed that “Aoun has proved high leadership capabilities which entitle him to reach the presidency.”
