Following the Lebanese parliament’s failure to elect a new president for the 12th time, the US State Department urged “Lebanon’s leaders and elites” to “prioritize the interests of the Lebanese people above their own ambitions and personal interests.”

Reacting to the presidential session, the US State Department expressed “deep concern over the actions of Lebanese parliament members who left the chamber, effectively obstructing the vote on the election of a president.” The US State Department further commented that “this move has further exacerbated the political uncertainty and instability in the country,” and highlighed “the urgent need for Lebanese leaders to address and resolve the ongoing political paralysis within the country.”

State Department Spokesman Matt Miller told reporters: “Ultimately, the political paralysis in Lebanon is an issue that Lebanese leaders must resolve… We believe that Lebanon’s leaders and their elites must stop putting their own interests and ambitions above the people of their country.”
