Leader of the Kataeb party Samy Gemayel reiterated on May 17 his stance regarding the Lebanese presidential elections, insisting that “surrender” is not a word in his vocabulary.

Gemayel, who spoke following a meeting with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian at Dar al-Fatwa, called on Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to convene a presidential electoral session.

Kataeb leader made it clear that his party will under no circumstance provide the necessary quorum that would allow Hezbollah’s candidate to succeed.

“The opposition has nominated Michel Moawad, and the other parties have nominated Sleiman Frangieh. If we genuinely want to reach a fruitful outcome, let us put forward a list of names,” Gemayel said.

“It is not acceptable for Hezbollah to expect us to backtrack on our support for Moawad while they cling to Frangieh’s candidacy,” he concluded.

Gemayel called on both sides to find a compromise.
