The President of the Beirut Bar Association, Nader Gaspard, held a meeting with the Acting Governor of the Banque du Liban, Wissam Mansouri.

Following their meeting, they issued a statement expressing their desire “not to amend the Code of Money and Credit until the presidential electoral process is completed, a new responsible government is appointed, and a legitimate Governor of the Banque du Liban is in place.”

On August 21, outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati chaired a meeting of the commission tasked with proposing amendments to the Code of Money and Credit.

The meeting was attended by outgoing Justice Minister Henri Khoury, Finance Minister Youssef Khalil, former ministers Ibrahim Najjar and Shakib Cortbawi, as well as Dr. Nasri Diab and experts Abdel Hafiz Mansour, Hassan Saleh, and Ghassan Ayash.

According to the press release, the meeting between Gaspard and Mansouri also emphasized “the need to enact balanced and equitable reform laws within a specified timeframe. It also stressed the importance of revitalizing the banking sector based on transparent principles and responsible governance.

This is vital to restoring confidence in the sector and ending the prevalence of the current cash-based economy in the financial markets, which is detrimental to the image and interests of the Lebanese State.”
