Toxic by Saule Bliuvaite, a story of two teenagers seeking freedom, wins the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival.

Toxic, a powerful debut feature by Lithuanian director Saule Bliuvaite, has claimed the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. The 77th edition of the festival, which began on August 7, featured over 225 films, including 104 world premieres. With more than 150,000 attendees, this event remains a must-see for auteur cinema lovers worldwide.

At just 30 years old, Saule Bliuvaite outshone 16 other international films to take home the top prize. Her film Toxic delves into the intricate transition between childhood and adulthood, a universal theme that resonates globally.

Saule Bliuvaite explained that her film captures the delicate moment when one feels trapped between two worlds, searching for direction. For her victory, she shared a prize of 75,000 Swiss francs with her producer.

The Swiss festival, one of the oldest in the world, also honored Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, New Zealand director Jane Campion, and Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron for their outstanding contributions to cinema. Khan, known as King Khan, drew a massive crowd to Locarno’s central square, one of the largest open-air cinema venues in the world. Alfonso Cuaron received a lifetime achievement award, while Jane Campion was celebrated for her amazing cinematic career.
