Back to Black is an upcoming drama film about the renowned singer Amy Winehouse, soon to be released in cinemas. The film chronicles the life and musical journey of Amy Winehouse, from adolescence to adulthood, and the creation of one of the best-selling albums of our time.

Back to Black is a musical drama directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. It stars Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, Jack O’Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Lesley Manville, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse and Ansu Kabia as Raye Cosbert. Amy Winehouse is known for her golden, jazzy voice and her short-lived career, making her a member of the infamous 27 Club, alongside Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain, among others. She was born to be a star, fully aware of her talent, and would sing out loud in front of cameras or in the streets, exuding a sense of freedom and captivating everyone around her with her powerful voice. Her tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil led her deep into the world of drugs. The film explores Amy’s struggle with addiction and her repeated attempts at rehabilitation, which were ultimately unsuccessful due to the pressures of fame and the music industry. At the time of her death, her blood alcohol level was 416%, more than five times the legal limit.

Several filmmakers previously attempted to create a fictional movie about the singer, but abandoned their projects as Amy Winehouse’s life didn’t easily conform to a single narrative. The closest depiction of her life is the 2015 British documentary Amy, directed by Asif Kapadia and produced by James Gay-Rees, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and focuses on Amy Winehouse’s life and addiction.

Back to Black celebrates an iconic star of the 21st century, telling the intriguing tale of Amy Winehouse. It paints a vivid picture of the Camden streets she called home and captures the struggles of global fame. The movie honors Amy’s artistry, wit and honesty, while attempting to unveil the secrets of her dark side. It offers a deep look at the celebrity machine of today and pays tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent.
