A painting by French Impressionist Claude Monet, depicting water lilies, achieved a sale price of $74 million, contributing to an animated autumn art auction season. Le bassin aux nymphes exceeded its anticipated sale price of $65 million at Christie’s auction house in New York this Thursday, November 9, 2023.

Christie’s auction house in New York featured significant sales of works by 20th-century expressionist painter Richard Diebenkorn and American artist Joan Mitchell. Diebenkorn’s Recollections of a Visit to Leningrad fetched $46 million, while Mitchell’s Untitled garnered $29 million. Additionally, three paintings by Paul Cezanne were auctioned, including Fruits et pot de gingembre, which sold for nearly $39 million.

A notable highlight occurred on Wednesday, with Pablo Picasso’s Woman with a Watch, a 1932 depiction of one of the Spanish artist’s companions and muses, French painter Marie-Therese Walter, reaching $139.3 million at Sotheby’s. This figure represents the second-highest price ever achieved for a Picasso work. Initially valued at over $120 million, the painting was a significant draw in the auction. The autumn auction season, debuting on Tuesday and concluding the following Wednesday, November 8, has witnessed substantial sales, totaling $748 million at Christie’s and over $400 million at Sotheby’s.
