On Thursday August 3, the exhibition “Through the Lens of Rising Photographers” inaugurated its showcase, unveiling the works of eight prodigious emerging Lebanese photographers. This second rendition of the Open Call concept, initiated by Maher Attar, provides a window into a new generation of artistic prowess. Nestled under the roof of the Art District Gallery, the works of Chloe Khoury, Christy Nader, Jinan Baalbaki, Jinane Nassar, Luna Salem, Mohammad Kaaki, Serge Al Helayel, and Serge Lahoud are displayed. A conversation with Maher Attar, the esteemed photographer, proprietor, and director of the Art District Gallery, sheds light on his initiative which debuted last year.

Rekindling an appreciation for photography

Since the inauguration of his gallery on November 2, 2021, Maher Attar has devoted himself to a project close to his heart: the Open Call concept. The first edition, entitled “Up and Coming Talented Photographers,” launched last year, addressing emerging Lebanese photographers. The second edition, called “Through the Lens of Rising Photographers,” marks the second edition, which will certainly not be the last.

“I want to rekindle a taste for photography in Lebanon,” says Maher Attar. “This initiative I’ve launched serves a double purpose: first, to galvanize local photographers into following their artistic pursuits, and second, to enrich the appreciation of the photographic art form, emphasizing work through cameras and distancing it from the triviality of today’s smartphones.”

This venture has allowed the selected participating artists to be part of their very first exhibition. “My goal is to give them the courage to pursue their artistic dreams and to offer them a platform to disseminate their works. Above all, I want them to be proud of their creations,” Attar adds.

Distinguishing images from photographs

Maher Attar’s stance is unwavering: “I strive above all to preserve the authenticity and the ‘haute couture’ spirit of photography.”

The casting call is disseminated via social media, and applicants’ portfolios are subsequently evaluated based on technique and imagery criteria, “distinguishing images from mere photos.” Moreover, the artists span various age groups and hail from diverse backgrounds. “Last year, our artists were between 21 and 54 years old; this year, between 18 and 40. It’s never too late to tap into one’s dormant artistic self.”

“What I seek is talent; it’s the ability of the chosen artists to convey messages through their images. These images are works of art,” concludes Attar.

In an era where digital convenience often eclipses traditional artistry, the “Through the Lens of Rising Photographers” exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring power and elegance of classical photography. It is an artistic endeavor that not only celebrates individual talents but also reaffirms the importance of authenticity and craftsmanship in the age of technology. It’s a compelling call both to art connoisseurs and the general populace, to embrace and acknowledge the profound depths of photographic art.
