Hezbollah issued a statement on Tuesday condemning Lebanon’s expulsion of the Iranian ambassador Mohammad Reza Sheibani.
Declaring Sheibani persona non-grata “constitutes a reckless and reprehensible step that serves neither Lebanon’s national interests, sovereignty, or national unity,” the statement asserted.
Hezbollah demanded that the Lebanese Foreign Ministry “immediately reverse” the move to expel Sheibani, and that it was a “national and strategic sin.”
The statement read that this decision “arrives at a moment of extreme peril” and claimed that the Lebanese Foreign Minister “aligned himself with a position…that serves the enemy.”
“Hezbollah views this decision as a grave and strategic blunder…throwing open the doors to internal divisions and deepening the national rift,” the organization added.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Sheibani must leave Lebanese territory by Sunday, March 29, declaring him persona non grata.
The Ministry said it will also consult with Lebanese Ambassador to Iran Ahmad Sweidan on the pretext of violations of established diplomatic norms by Iran to assess the relationship between the two countries.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised the decision, expressing that “the Lebanese government took a bold decision to expel the Iranian ambassador from Lebanon.” He added that “this is a watershed step…in the context of major changes in the region which can be reached if the empire of evil from Tehran is wiped out so that peace can be brought to this region.”
