The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) revealed Tuesday that its peacekeepers observed Israeli troops crossing into Lebanese territory near the southern border towns of Markaba, al-Odaysse, Kfarkila and Ramia before returning to the Blue Line.

In a press release, UNIFIL stated that since the last conflict and the cessation of hostilities understanding, the Israeli army has maintained five positions and two “buffer zones” inside Lebanon, in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

“Over the past two days, as well as dozens of rockets and missiles fired into Israel claimed by Hezbollah, UNIFIL has recorded several airstrikes and hundreds of incidents of firing across the Blue Line and 84 air violations,” the statement said, describing each incident as “a serious breach” of Resolution 1701.

UNIFIL added that it remains in constant contact with both the Lebanese and Israeli sides, as well as the tripartite Mechanism, to urge de-escalation. Despite what it described as extremely challenging conditions, the mission said peacekeepers continue to carry out their mandated tasks and will keep reporting developments to the Security Council.

“Through our continued presence, patrols, operational activities and community engagements, we proudly demonstrate our enduring commitment to peace and security in the region,” the statement continued.

The mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting stability, de-escalation, and the extension of Lebanese state authority, while maintaining close engagement with local communities and taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of its peacekeepers.
