Hundreds of supporters of Lebanon’s Iran-aligned Hezbollah movement gathered on Sunday in Beirut’s southern suburbs and other regions to mourn the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and express solidarity with the Islamic Republic amid a rapidly intensifying regional conflict.
The rallies, held in the Ashoura Square of the southern suburb of Beirut and replicated in other towns such as Nabatieh and parts of the Bekaa Valley, featured participants waving Hezbollah and Iranian flags and carrying large portraits of Khamenei. Attendees denounced the U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Khamenei and other senior Iranian leaders as a “heinous crime” and reaffirmed support for resistance against what they described as American and Israeli aggression.
Hezbollah Leadership Message
Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem delivered a strong verbal message during the gatherings orchestrated by the party, emphasizing that Hezbollah will “fulfill its duty” to confront what he described as the aggression against Iran. However, it is not clear what “duty” entails or whether it includes direct military engagement against Israel.
In his remarks, Qassem described the strikes on Khamenei as “the height of crime,” asserting that the movement and its supporters will “continue on this path with determination, steadfastness, and a spirit of sacrifice,” rejecting humiliation and insisting on resistance against American and Israeli “tyranny” and “criminal actions.”
Qassem’s message underscored Hezbollah’s ideological alignment with Tehran’s hardline stance and its commitment to the Iran-centered “resistance” axis, though he stopped short of announcing any immediate military engagement in the current region-wide confrontation.
Widespread Local Mobilization
Beyond the Beirut gathering, similar large crowds formed in Shia-majority areas of southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, where residents echoed calls for continued resistance and praised Khamenei’s legacy. These demonstrations were also accompanied by smaller motorbike processions through streets in southern Beirut, with chants and slogans in support of Iran’s leadership.
Hezbollah has not announced a military intervention in the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. Earlier statements from Hezbollah officials suggested the movement would refrain from intervening militarily unless certain “red line” conditions were met, such as direct targeting of Iran’s supreme leadership.
Lebanese Political Authorities and Broader Context
In parallel, Lebanese political figures have condemned the assassination and expressed solidarity with Iran, while cautioning against dragging Lebanon into a wider conflict. A senior Shiite official in Lebanon’s Higher Shiite Council condemned the killing of Khamenei as a violation of international norms and extended condolences to the Iranian people.
The rallies come amid an intensifying regional confrontation following joint U.S.–Israeli strikes against Iranian targets, which triggered Iranian missile and drone retaliation across the Middle East. The conflict’s escalation has raised concern among Lebanese authorities, who fear spillover into Lebanon, given Hezbollah’s historic role in past confrontations with Israel.
