The Council of Ministers met on Thursday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. It approved the continued use of the Jdeideh landfill until the end of 2026 and tasked the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) with establishing a power plant on-site.

Following the session, Minister of Information Paul Morcos announced that the Cabinet also approved the expansion of the New Landfill and the establishment of Cell No. 8. A draft law will be referred to Parliament to open the necessary credits and formally assign the CDR to create the new landfill cell in accordance with technical and environmental requirements.

Morcos clarified that waste reception at the current landfill will cease before the end of 2026, or once its capacity is exhausted, after which the site will be permanently closed. He added that the Jdeideh municipality retains the right to invest in the energy produced from the two commissioned projects and to grant licenses to municipalities wishing to establish waste treatment plants.

The meeting, attended by the mayor of Jdeideh, also tasked the Ministry of Justice with examining possible legal actions in response to Israeli attacks on journalists during the recent war.

Ahead of the session, CDR head Mohammad Qabbani noted that the government’s current plan includes expanding the new landfill as part of its broader waste management strategy.
