Waste Management Company Ramco announced on Tuesday the immediate suspension of its waste collection operations in several areas of Mount Lebanon, Keserwan and Beirut. This decision follows the sudden closure of the Jdeideh landfill, which occurred at 4 AM on Tuesday.

In a statement released in the morning, the company explained that it can no longer carry out its work in the aforementioned areas “until the site reopens and waste treatment activities resume.”

The shutdown of the Jdeideh landfill, one of the main disposal sites for household solid waste from the capital and its suburbs, threatens to worsen an already fragile situation. Ramco stated that it has alerted the relevant authorities to the risks of uncontrolled garbage accumulation due to this suspension. The company added that it is awaiting an official notification regarding the resumption of activities at the site before restarting its operations.

This interruption comes as Lebanon’s waste management system continues to suffer from chronic fragility, with heavy dependence on a small number of treatment centers.
