US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson highlighted the central role played by the Lebanese Army since the ceasefire agreement, praising its performance as “impressive” but stressing that it is “not enough” to guarantee lasting stability.
Speaking in Beirut, Johnson underscored the need for additional measures to strengthen security and support political progress. “The Lebanese Army has carried out a remarkable effort under challenging circumstances,” she said, while noting that the country’s broader challenges cannot be addressed by the military alone.
Johnson pointed to government decisions in August and September to begin withdrawing illegal weapons as a “step in the right direction,” but emphasized that such measures, though significant, remain insufficient on their own.
“The progress made in the past seven months exceeds what was achieved in the previous six years,” the ambassador noted, referencing recent security and governance efforts that have moved faster than in the past, backed by both the army and international partners.
