Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri stressed that addressing the detainee file requires a shared legal framework with Damascus.

“We discussed establishing a judicial cooperation agreement between Lebanon and Syria to address the detainee issue,” Mitri told Syria TV.

He clarified that talks on the detainees have not yet reached the stage of names and lists. Mitri also pointed out that 34 agreements between Syria and Lebanon need to be reviewed and reassessed.

On broader ties, he noted, “We have made significant progress with Syria on border control and combating smuggling, and efforts continue to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.”

Mitri concluded that relations with Damascus have entered a new phase different from previous stages, adding that President Ahmad al-Sharaa's recent speech opened a window for rapprochement with Lebanon.
