President Joseph Aoun on Tuesday reaffirmed that “no one is above the law” as the government moves to combat corruption, warning that some actors are intent on destroying Lebanon.
Addressing a delegation of students from the Maronite Foundation for the Diaspora, Aoun said the government’s priority is to restore confidence between the Lebanese people and their state, as well as between Lebanon and the international community.
“Our goal is to put Lebanon on the path to recovery, but unfortunately, some are paid to destroy the country. They are the antithesis of the state. However, if the state stands on its feet, they will come to an end,” he said.
Aoun attributed the country’s current plight to decades of neglect but insisted that “the decision has been made, and the country has been placed on the right track.” He cited positive signs from government reforms, stressing that “all taboos have fallen” and that “no one is above the law” in the fight against corruption.
He praised the Lebanese diaspora as “the backbone of Lebanon and its ambassadors abroad,” noting their vital role in supporting the country during times of crisis.
“Lebanon needs you, just as you need it,” he told the delegation.
