Former head of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) Walid Joumblatt emphasized on Monday that preserving the Lebanese state remains a shared priority with international partners, particularly the United States.
“Our concern is the same as the American concern, to preserve Greater Lebanon,” Joumblatt said following a meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, in response to remarks by US envoy Tom Barrack, who warned that Lebanon risks “going back to Bilad al-Sham” if it failed to act quickly on regional realignment.
“We are committed to the current entities,” he added.
Furthermore, Joumblatt voiced support for the Lebanese Army (LAF) and security forces, noting their continued efforts in maintaining national stability. He highlighted the army’s recent operation to dismantle a large Captagon drug factory in Yamouna.
Touching on domestic political matters, Joumblatt expressed confidence that pending official appointments would move forward as planned. Addressing ongoing Israeli threats, he said, “They are a sword [hanging over us], but this situation cannot continue.”
On regional developments, particularly in Syria, Joumblatt endorsed reconciliation efforts in the southern province of Sweida, stating, “We support reconciliation under the auspices of the Syrian state.”
