Lebanon has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2026–2028 term, following a vote held Thursday at UN headquarters in New York. The announcement comes on the heels of Lebanon’s recent appointment as one of the Vice Presidents of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, which is currently presided over by Ms. Annalena Baerbock.

The successful bid, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates through Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the UN, is seen as a notable diplomatic milestone.

Lebanon’s election to ECOSOC reflects the international community’s continued confidence in its multilateral engagement and underscores its legacy as a founding member of the United Nations. The appointment is expected to strengthen Lebanon’s role in shaping global economic and social policies and expand its footprint within the broader UN system.

ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. Comprising 54 member states elected by the General Assembly, it is tasked with promoting international cooperation on economic, social, and environmental issues. The council plays a central role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, coordinating UN agencies, and working with civil society through accredited NGOs on key issues such as poverty, health, and education.
