United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Major General Diodato Abagnara of Italy as the new Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the UN announced on Wednesday.
Major General Abagnara succeeds Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz of Spain, who led the mission during what the UN described as “one of its most challenging periods.” The Secretary-General expressed his deep gratitude to Lázaro Sáenz for his dedication and leadership throughout his tenure.
Abagnara brings significant experience to the role, having previously served as Commander and Chair of the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon (MTC4L), where he led key multinational coordination efforts in support of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
