Lebanese President Joseph Aoun arrived in Rome Saturday afternoon to attend the inauguration ceremony of Pope Leo XIV, underscoring that Lebanon’s presence at the event goes far beyond protocol.

“Our participation today reaffirms the deep-rooted ties and strong relationship between Lebanon and the Holy See,” Aoun said upon his arrival at Rome’s Ciampino military base.

The president met first with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at her office in Rome. He also held discussions with his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella.

Highlighting Lebanon’s unique religious and cultural identity, he stressed the country’s enduring role as a beacon of religious freedom and pluralism. “Lebanon continues to stand as a model of coexistence and resilience,” he added.

Aoun also conveyed Lebanon’s broader message to the international community, centered on unity and perseverance: “Dialogue is not a slogan, but a journey that demands determination and commitment. At its heart lie dignity, justice and peace – fundamental rights for all.”

“These principles are universal,” he emphasized, “applying to every human being, regardless of faith or identity.”

The inaugural Mass will take place Sunday morning at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, marking a historic moment for the new pontificate. President Aoun, accompanied by First Lady Nehmat Aoun, expressed his honor in returning to the Apostolic See, recalling his participation in the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis.
