One person was killed and two others were injured in an explosion that occurred on Tuesday at the premises of a company located in Isfahan, Iran. The company operates under the supervision of Iran’s National Security Council and specializes in the manufacture of explosives, according to Iranian media reports.
The incident comes just three days after a massive and deadly explosion at the port of Bandar Abbas, where around sixty people were killed.
Iranian Labor News Agency, ILNA, reported that an investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the blast.
According to unconfirmed reports cited by media sources, the containers stored in the company’s warehouse were filled with sodium perchlorate, a compound used in the production of missile fuel.
Iranian Defense Ministry spokesperson Reza Talaei Nik denied any military-related incident. However, various media outlets report that public opinion in Iran remains skeptical, especially in light of earlier reports that, last January, Iran imported 2,000 tons of materials related to missile fuel production from China.
This import, observers suggest, may indicate Iran’s intent to bolster its ballistic capabilities amid the possibility of a forthcoming escalation with the US and Israel.
The explosion caused significant material damage, with several vehicles reduced to wreckage, according to footage broadcast by state media.
