A UNIFIL patrol was briefly intercepted twice near the southern Lebanese town of Tayr Dabba.

According to local media, a group of young men on motorcycles blocked the convoy, making hostile remarks toward the peacekeepers.

UNIFIL deputy spokesperson Candice Ardell confirmed the incidents in a statement.

She said that the soldiers were “conducting a routine mission in support of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 when individuals in civilian clothing attempted to block their way.”

“The patrol then took an alternative route. The vehicles were followed for a short distance before being able to continue their planned mission without major incident,” Ardell said.

She added that UNIFIL had notified the Lebanese Army of the incident.

Ardell also reiterated that UNIFIL operates in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces to support the Lebanese government in implementing Resolution 1701.

She warned that “any attempt to interfere with the work of peacekeepers constitutes a violation of Lebanon’s commitment to the resolution’s implementation.”
