Karim Salam, the brother of former Minister of Economy and Trade Amin Salam, was detained on Friday by the financial prosecutor, Judge Ali Ibrahim, on the grounds of a report filed by MP Farid Boustani, as reported by local channel LBCI.
Amin Salam, for his part, has still not been summoned.
On March 20, Attorney General Jamal Hajjar issued a decision banning the former Minister of Economy from leaving the country, following a complaint lodged with the Public Prosecutor's Office by MP Farid Boustani, Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for the Economy, Industry, Trade and Planning.
The complaint was lodged against Amin Salam and several of his close associates, including his advisors Karim Salam and Fadi Tamim, as well as Elie Abboud, the latter as the authorized signatory. Boustani accuses them of embezzlement, extortion, misappropriation of public funds and money laundering.
A preliminary file was also drawn up, listing a series of alleged irregularities committed by Amin Salam during his tenure at the Ministry of the Economy.
