Beirut’s First Investigating Judge, Bilal Halawi, issued an in-person arrest warrant against Karim Salam, advisor and brother of former Minister of Economy Amin Salam, in the case brought against him by the Financial Public Prosecution.
Salam, who was interrogated on Tuesday by Judge Halawi, faces charges of embezzlement, extortion of insurance companies and illicit enrichment.
A follow-up session is scheduled for next Thursday, during which three witnesses will testify in the case: George Matossian, owner of Mashreq Insurance Company, Eli Aboud, head of the Lebanese Association of Certified Public Accountants, and Fadi Tamim.
Karim Salam was detained last Friday by Financial Prosecutor Judge Ali Ibrahim following a report filed by MP Farid Boustani. Amin Salam, the former Minister of Economy, has not yet been summoned. However, it is important to note that on March 20, Attorney General Jamal Hajjar issued a decision banning Amin Salam from leaving the country.
These events follow a complaint filed with the Public Prosecutor's Office by MP Farid Boustani, Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for the Economy, Industry, Trade and Planning. The complaint accuses Amin Salam and his close associates—including Karim Salam, Fadi Tamim and Elie Abboud—of embezzlement, extortion, misappropriation of public funds and money laundering.
