Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai emphasized on Wednesday the importance of the Lebanese Constitution, calling it “the backbone of Lebanon” and cautioning that “any deviation from its provisions contributes to the country’s paralysis.”
Patriarch Rai welcomed to Bkerke a delegation from the Saydet al-Jabal Gathering, led by former MP Fares Souhaid and accompanied by former MP Ahmad Fatfat. Subsequently, he held talks with MP Farid Haykal al-Khazen.
Following the meetings, the Patriarch stressed that “the Constitution and the Taif Agreement are complementary,” stressing the need for their full implementation.
He expressed hope that a “President of the Republic will be elected on January 9,” paving the way for Lebanon’s reconstruction and the enforcement of constitutional provisions.
It is worth noting that Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has set January 9, 2025, as the date for a parliamentary session to elect a new head of state. This seat has been vacant since October of 2022.
