The Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon, Alaa Moussa, confirmed on Wednesday that the Lebanese presidential electoral session, called by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, will begin on January 9.
The session will proceed with multiple rounds of voting until a new president – a position that has remained vacant since October 2022 – is elected.
Speaking from Ain al-Tineh after the meeting of the Quintet committee (comprising the United States, France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar) involved in the presidential file, Moussa noted that “consultations are currently ongoing.”
He added that Berri is “actively engaged in negotiations to identify one or more consensus candidates.” However, Moussa clarified that “no specific names were discussed during the meeting.”
It is also important to mention that during a legislative session on November 28, Berri announced that the electoral session would be scheduled for January 9, 2025, and confirmed that ambassadors from several countries would be invited to attend.
