Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed on Tuesday the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, acknowledging the efforts deployed by the US and France in facilitating the agreement.

In a phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden, Mikati expressed his gratitude for U.S. support for Lebanon and the efforts of his envoy, Amos Hochstein, in reaching the ceasefire agreement.

“This understanding, which lays out a roadmap for the ceasefire and which I reviewed this evening, represents a critical step toward restoring calm and stability in Lebanon and enabling displaced people to return to their homes and towns. It also contributes to fostering regional stability,” he said.

“I deeply appreciate the joint efforts of the United States and France in reaching this agreement and reaffirm the government’s commitment to implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, strengthening the presence of the Lebanese army in the south, and cooperating with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL),” the PM added.

Furthermore, he called for Israel’s full compliance with the ceasefire agreement, the withdrawal from all occupied areas and sites, and complete adherence to Resolution 1701.
