This, Too, Is a Crime!
©This is Beirut

In the midst of this physical, psychological and national havoc, some indulge in playfulness and merriment, while mocking and provoking those who are safe. They exploit applications and websites to get “suspicious” numbers to send false messages threatening civilians with death and the destruction of their homes. They then gleefully watch on television as these individuals flee their homes and take to the streets, with chilling indifference, showing no compassion for children, the sick or the elderly!

There is no room for excuses, in a situation overshadowed by the pervasive presence of death, fear and displacement all around us.

We have simply transformed into a “ball of anxiety,” living under the shadow of dread, whether we find ourselves under bombardment or still navigating a tenuous calm, until further notice.

Perhaps some of us are not directly under fire, but each of us knows someone who has faced threats and displacement. We all have loved ones who remain in their homes, and we live in constant terror for their safety.

Each of us is haunted by nightmares; the warplanes soaring overhead have shattered not only the sound barrier but also our inner peace, invading our precious hours of sleep!

We have all become prisoners to the scenes of destruction – towns and villages reduced to ashes, weary citizens on the roads and in schools, and those desperately seeking shelter, which a greedy few are renting out at exorbitant prices.

We stand on the brink of surrender, yet we continue to resist, holding fast to the hope that our homeland will someday rise from its ruins and be reborn. We envision Lebanon “revived” and Beirut shining once again as a capital of joy, rather than a city cloaked in the grim colors of hellish airstrikes!

We stand united, supporting one another and sharing words of encouragement, convinced that this dark period will eventually pass. A “better” day awaits us, even if it feels distant, and we will rediscover the lives we nearly forgot, where vibrant memories once flourished and images of life prevailed.

Yet, amid all this...

In the midst of this physical, psychological and national havoc, some indulge in playfulness and merriment, while mocking and provoking those who are safe.

There are those seeking out applications and websites that provide “suspicious” numbers to send false messages threatening civilians with death and the destruction of their homes!

After committing these heinous acts, they watch on television as these individuals flee their homes, clutching whatever belongings they can carry and taking to the streets. They observe and follow with chilling indifference, showing no compassion for children, the sick or the elderly!

Only to discover that this panic was the result of a despicable “lie” spun by one of them!

Some individuals have the time and privilege to manipulate Photoshop, crafting fake alerts that imitate the tweets of the Israeli military spokesperson. Their sole aim is to instill fear, forcing temporary displacement and transforming the lives of ordinary citizens into an unending nightmare.

Some have simply chosen to be more criminal than the criminal himself. They have transcended mere complicity in heinous acts, outperforming the perpetrators, as the identity and objectives of the true criminal are unmistakably known.

As for those who engage in these actions merely for the sake of mockery and laughter, lacking any true purpose or motivation, they are the most despicable!

Those who enjoy uprooting the safe from their homes, watching children weep and the elderly struggle to take even a few laborious steps, share the same guilt as a murderer. Murder isn’t confined to the use of weapons; it also manifests in psychological death, suffering, and the relentless struggle to cope with a daily life overshadowed by fear that has grown unbearably bitter!
