During meetings with the crisis cells in West Aley and Choueifat-Khaldeh on Monday, former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Joumblatt presented a national initiative aimed at halting the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon.
The central focus of the plan is the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the deployment of the Lebanese Army in coordination with UNIFIL in the south, as well as addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict.
“This initiative seeks to create a roadmap for national unity,” emphasized Walid Joumblatt, highlighting the need to mobilize Lebanon’s official and political institutions to confront the hostilities.
He also pointed to the pressing issue of Lebanon’s presidential vacuum, proposing a shift away from dialogue and towards electing a consensus president through a national settlement.
“We are not seeking to exclude any major political force from this process,” he affirmed, noting that MP Wael Abou Faour had been tasked with visiting Christian political factions to explain the initiative and promote cooperation.
Joumblatt warned that the war could last for some time and called for a coordinated national response.
“This requires mobilizing crisis cells, municipalities, political parties, and civil society for more effective relief efforts,” underscoring the need for unified action to aid displaced individuals.
Joumblatt also expressed gratitude for the funds and donations allocated for humanitarian assistance. He noted that the Farah Social Foundation, under the supervision of Dalia Joumblatt, was overseeing the coordination of these efforts.
