The command of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) issued a statement on Tuesday emphasizing that any crossing into Lebanon constitutes a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a breach of Resolution 1701. The statement stressed, "We urge all parties to refrain from these acts of escalation, which will only lead to more violence and bloodshed." It noted that the Israeli Army had informed them on Monday of its intention to conduct limited ground incursions into Lebanon.
The text further calls on all parties to recommit to the Security Council resolutions and Resolution 1701 (2006) as the only viable solution to restore stability in the region.
"Despite this dangerous development, peacekeepers remain in position. We regularly adjust our position and activities, and we have contingency plans ready to be activated if absolutely necessary," reiterated the statement. The safety and security of peacekeepers are paramount, and all parties are reminded of their obligation to respect them, as emphasized by UNIFIL.
On the other hand, local TV station MTV reported CNN quoting a UNIFIL source saying that the Israeli Army had carried out sporadic cross-border operations, but that its forces did not remain in Lebanon.
