The Renewal Bloc stated on Monday that it will participate in the parliamentary session to discuss the 2024 budget, “despite its principled and constitutional stance against legislating in the absence of a president and amid the obstruction of the presidential election.”
This decision aims to ensure the quorum for the session, “protecting the committed citizen, the legitimate private sector and public sector institutions.”
The statement notes that the government's “flawed budget is presented as an organized assassination against them and serves the interests of the corrupt public sector system and the black economy, along with all the champions of tax evasion and smuggling.”
The bloc emphasizes that if it and opposition forces were not to participate in this session, that would expose them to “a loss of quorum, which, according to the Constitution, would lead the government's budget to be issued by decree.”
“This poses a strategic and structural danger that would be difficult to rectify when it comes to Lebanon's economic identity, its legitimate economy and the law-abiding Lebanese committed to fulfilling their financial obligations to the state,” the statement added.
On another note, the bloc condemns the recent actions taken by some judiciary officials regarding the Beirut port explosion case.
The bloc views these steps as suspicious, representing part of a wider campaign to freeze the investigation.
“The goal is to obscure the investigation into the crime of the century, prevent accountability and justice, politicize the case and push it into the labyrinths of oblivion,” the statement said, assuring that “as a parliamentary bloc and opposition, we will confront this, coordinating and partnering with the families of the victims and the Lebanese people. We will remain on the side of the Beirut port explosion victims until justice is served.”
