The Maronite Patriarch, Bechara al-Rai, said on Thursday that "he who claims to be able to control this country by stifling plurality is mistaken."
"He is responsible for our internal problems," al-Rai insisted before a delegation from the Daou Family League in the presence of MP Mark Daou.
"We must preserve our unity in diversity," he said. "This is our mission in the Orient."
Turning to the issue of the presidential election, Patriarch al-Rai wondered whether the aim was "to push the Lebanese to get used to the absence of the head of state."
"This will not happen," he insisted. "The parliament will not be able to legislate if it loses its legislative power, nor will the government be able to make decisions and appointments. This is unacceptable," he added.
"We always reiterate this position. This is the real resistance," the patriarch concluded.
