Catholic schools across Lebanon are set to embark on an open strike starting Thursday, December 21, 2023.

This announcement comes on the heels of a controversial parliamentary law passed on December 15, 2023, aimed at amending certain regulations governing educational authority in private schools and the management of school budgets.

The Episcopal Committee for Catholic Schools in Lebanon, in response to this legislative development, issued a resolute decision on December 20, 2023. Expressing strong objection, the committee contends that the newly enacted law is impractical, arbitrary and lacks a foundation in legislative principles and positive reasoning. According to the committee, the legislation failed to account for potential consequences that could significantly impact the educational community and the future of its students.

As a direct response to what they perceive as a critical threat to the well-being of Catholic schools, the Episcopal Committee has called for an open strike across all Catholic educational institutions. This strike is set to begin on the morning of Thursday, December 21, 2023, and will persist until there is a reconsideration of the current legislation.
