KOON is making waves as a ground-breaking cultural space where art and nature embrace. Nestled in nature’s lap, this vibrant haven is becoming a hotspot, hosting artistic events and soul-enriching experiences. We managed to catch up with the creative genius behind KOON, Mazen Kiwan, who spilled the beans about this enthralling retreat in an interview with the Cultural Agenda.

Please, enlighten us about KOON.

KOON is an open-air sanctuary ensconced in nature, nestled within the Chouf District, skirting the biosphere reserve of the Cedars of Chouf. It serves as a musical, artistic, and cultural area, offering top-tier entertainment events, recreational activities, along with an opulent “glamping” accommodation. This venture endeavors to amalgamate the urban artistic experience with alfresco leisure, fostering a confluence of art aficionados and nature enthusiasts.

What incited you to select the Chouf region?

Hailing from Upper Chouf, this region is inextricably woven into my lineage. The larger part of my existence has been in the metropolis, where the urban landscape has molded me into an artist and performer. The cornucopia and ingenuity of spectacles and individuals I have been immersed in enticed me to develop my skills. However, while the city is the crucible that tests my spirit, nature is where my heart finds solace. I find tranquility away from cacophony and haste. In 2013, I purchased a plot in an isolated enclave in the Chouf district mountains and built my refuge. This became my sanctuary, allowing me to reconnect with my inner essence. All that was required was to behold the boundless beauty surrounding me and to listen to the silence. Nevertheless, there was a quandary because I was unaware when something happened in the city. This conundrum of choosing between the city and the mountains spurred the contemplation of melding the best of both worlds. Thus, “KOON” was conceived. Beyond this sentimental attachment, to me, Chouf represents a region with pristine natural capital. It has retained its traditional identity and serves as an idyllic backdrop for cultivating authentic experiences.
