The Bekaa regional command in the Internal Security Forces (ISF) launched an investigation in order to find out whether or not an explosion took place at the Twity quarries in the Zahle area.

Zahle residents witnessed an earthquake at around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, preceded by the sound of an explosion. Seismic monitoring centers registered level 3 activity on the Richter scale.

Army intelligence units cordoned off the quarry area in order to secure the perimeter while waiting for the explosives specialist to arrive and inspect the location.

Seismologist Tony al-Nemr tweeted that “the earthquake on the outskirts of Zahle is suspicious in its timing (Saturday afternoon), just like the May 6 one that occurred on the outskirts of Keserwan, also in the quarries area.”
