Israeli forces have killed Faiq Mabhouh, Hamas’s internal security commander, at Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital on Monday morning, according to Israeli defense sources.

The Israeli army announced Monday an operation was under way in Gaza’s main hospital Al-Shifa, saying the complex was being used by senior Hamas militants.

Soldiers “are currently conducting a precise operation in the area of the Shifa hospital,” a statement from the military said.

“The operation is based on intelligence information indicating the use of the hospital by senior Hamas terrorists.”

Faiq Mabhouh is the brother of Mahmoud Mabhouh, said to have been assassinated by the Mossad in Dubai in 2010, the same sources confirmed to The Times of Israel.

Mahmoud Mabhouh was the chief of logistics and weapons procurement for Hamas. He was also wanted by Israel for the 1989 kidnappings and murders of Israeli soldiers Avi Sasportas and Ilan Saadon.

The assassination of Mabhouh made international headlines when Dubai police published CCTV footage and photographs of the alleged hit team at the hotel and the airport, carrying British, French, German, Australian and Irish passports.

It later emerged that some of the identity documents were fraudulent and were stolen from dual Israeli nationals, sparking a diplomatic conflagration.
