The US Secretary of Defense expressed support for Israel’s defense rights in a phone call on Friday, emphasizing uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza and a commitment to diplomatic solutions along the Israel-Lebanon border.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on Friday, expressing US support for Israel’s right to defend itself. He underscored the significance of ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, as stated by the Pentagon Press Secretary.
Secretary Austin also stressed the US commitment to using diplomacy to address issues along the Israel-Lebanon border and to prevent escalation in the region.
CIA director William Burns is reportedly planning to travel to Europe soon for negotiations on a new truce in Gaza and the release of hostages, following US President Joe Biden’s Middle East envoy Brett McGurk’s ongoing talks in the region.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague might rule against Israel over alleged genocidal acts in its campaign against Hamas, though its power to enforce decisions is limited. The ICJ’s decision on that application is due on Friday.
This case sparked fury in Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing, “No one will stop us.”
